The king of the New Zealand bush, and one of our most beloved species. These are endemic nectar feeders renowned for their song, which swoops and warbles and chirrups as they establish territories and call to one another.

The early european settlers called them "parson birds" because of the dark colouring and white neck ruff. In fact there is not a single black feather on their body.
